Description

Lord of Dragons, lord of swords
Shinwa's Dragon Lord Katana represents handcrafted beauty with an edge - times two. Though this Damascus steel wonder pays homage to Japan’s ancient swordcraft tradition in overall form and performance, Shinwa developed the double-edged "Dragon Lord" with today’s serious swordsman in mind. Master smiths painstakingly hand forge every savagely pointed blade, and seasoned sword artisans carefully handcraft each tsuka and saya. From vigorously hammering the molten blade steel to gingerly wrapping faux ray skin and cord around the tsuka, every step in the Dragon Lord's construction receives the utmost care and precise attention to detail.

Double-edged masterwork in hand forged steel
Some of the world's - and indeed history's - most revered, time-tested techniques are employed, and every material meets or exceeds stringent quality standards. A quintessential example is the Dragon Lord's eye-catching Damascus steel tanto blade, which teems with potency and visual splendor - a spectacular wonder in its own right with its contrasting lines, waves, swirls and other mesmerizing patterns. Each line is a distinct variety of steel, hammer welded and folded repeatedly to yield the thousands of layers in each Dragon Lord blade. The unique metalsmithing technique’s roots stretch back to the Middle Ages, and today it’s still painstakingly performed by seasoned hands, unsullied by soulless automation and disconnected mechanization.

Ancient forging technique yields distinctly modern katana
In a nutshell, a master Shinwa swordsmith from the ancient sword-making village of Longquan fires a stack of steel strips - each a different alloy - in a white-hot forge until the metal glows cherry red. He then removes the stack and hammers it until it’s around half as thick as the original. Then he folds the metal onto itself lengthwise and hammers each half together. The process is meticulously repeated until the desired layering effect is achieved, at which point a final quenching strengthens the resulting blade blank and an acid etching highlights vivid contrasts in the layers. And the slow, laborious process itself it just the beginning!

Swordcraft artistry only a seasoned hand could produce
In order to achieve sufficiently dramatic contrasts, Shinwa’s master smiths must expertly select an appropriate combination of steel alloys of varying color, luminescence and other visual qualities. For the sake of strength, resilience and countless additional blade factors, the smiths must also must consider each alloy’s distinct melting point, proper stacking order, forge temperature and myriad other variables. Simply put, an unbelievable quantity of blood, sweat and tears goes into every Dragon Lord blade, but lay eyes on it just once, and you’ll know it was well worth the trouble. Furthermore, like a steel snowflake or fingerprint, the patterning on no two Dragon Lord blades is exactly alike.

Display worthy beauty, battlefield-worthy capability and strength
But the Dragon Lord is so much more than a pretty face. More like a “wild beast decked out in regal robes,” the Dragon Lord’s stout tanto blade slices cleanly and effortlessly through rolled tatami mats, thick bamboo and other tameshigiri standards, retaining its razor sharp edge through it all. Its twin edges culminate with a savage point that boasts incredible penetrating power, as well. The Dragon Lord's weight is shrewdly distributed to maximize swinging momentum and power, blow after devastating blow. This impeccable balance also improves control and responsiveness, allowing for greater agility and flexibility in combat. The faux ray skin and classic ito that encircles the tsuka affords a comfortable, no-slip grip, further enhancing the Dragon Lord’s superb feel. Flawlessly cast, the tsuba features a breathtaking dragon design.

Enduring quality and allure, generation after generation
The Dragon Lord has proven itself time and again, and it holds its own against any of today's most expensive katana, outperforming many. But the old cliché is true - "action" does indeed "speak louder than words," and at this unbeatable, downright unheard of price, why deny yourself the opportunity to experience Shinwa's Dragon Lord Katana for yourself? No matter how you use it, with proper care you can enjoy it for a lifetime, then pass it down to your children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren! The Dragon Lord is heirloom-quality and built to be treasured by generations of your descendants - your legacy preserved in hand forged Damascus steel.

Nice sword, really.

It came sharp out of the package. beautiful sword all together. Nice presentation box but made out of cardboard, with a soft sword sock for keeping the dust off your sword. It feels nice and solid and looks and feels like it could do some damage. I'm not out hacking trees or anything else to see if I can break it or not break it. That's for people that have money to throw away. It seems strong enough to do the job it was purchased for and that's good enough for me. It's balanced pretty good, a little heavy in the blade so I can get some strength behind a swing with minimal effort. It should work well for why I bought it and I believe it was worth the few months I had to wait for it to get back in stock.

This is a very well made sword for the price. I placed the cardboard box it came in up with no support and sliced right through the whole thing. I can tell from the weight and feel of the sword it's not a cheep show sword, but it's not a battle ready sword either. For the price I payed I give it a thumbs up. I could not find this style sword for sale anywhere on the internet. I did find one flaw with mine. The blade doesn't line up completely straight with the handle, now the average person most likely cant tell but I have handled many weapons. It may only be a few degrees but again I'm just pointing it out, not complaining. For a sword under $450 you have no right to point out the little imperfections. All the bad reviews on this sword are from people who treat this sword like it's a $500 sword. I've been a weapons specialist for the majority of my life and for the money this is a good purchase. I might even buy another one just to see if it is lined up with the handle 100%. Remember if you want to complain about craftsmanship you need to spend at least $300.

Great sword. i love it. Well worth the price. it comes with a beautiful display box and a cloth bag as well. i bought a wall rack for my swords, but that wouldn't do justice to this sword. i am going to put it on a shelf to display the display box with the sword resting in it. Great quality and nice edges. Well worth the price. no complaints from me. highly recommend it to anyone that wants a fully functional sword for a great price.

pretty good

well im her husband lol js.. I got this beautiful peace of art, when I did my tests it mostly was successful. I got cleanly through milk jugs, bottles, ex. But unfortunately the Damascus well, it is just a coating over the blade. I struck a peace of wood to see if there was any sort of warping, and it held strong, but the blade did have a bit of scratches over the surface that showed me it wasn't true Damascus. disappointment of course but I am very happy with the easy buy. if you're looking for a battle ready sward make sure its 1060 carbon, or true Damascus. thank you

sad, blade covered in wax, "damascus" came off while cutting, handle was plastic "covered", and the edge was not sharp. Will never buy shinwa ever again.

Not a Shinwa fan here: This would be a great blade for defense if it had a hard wood handle instead of the course, uncomfortable and unreliable cord wrap, and if the blade was a bit wider and shorter, say 31-33 inches over all length. The 41 inch length straight sword is too heavy, slow and cumbersome. I would gladly spend 100 plus on a better balanced sword.

Very Nice Sword

A very nice sword in the Chinese/Korean tradition. I would not call it a Katana but that is a minor point. The display box is nice to look at but not the strongest. You pay for what you get. The blade is nice and just sharp enough for this design. It only has one peg rather than two that is found on most full-tanged Katana like swords. The Damascus steel look is well done on the blade. Great balance. Fits the scabbard firmly with no rattle.
