He joined Frodo and the other selected members of the Fellowship as they crossed Middle-earth in their quest to destroy the Ring. In The Two Towers, Gandalf was sent back to Middle-earth as Gandalf the White. To complete his task he was given a new white staff to aid in the battle to defeat Sauron. The staff was adorned with an intricate and delicately styled crown that held a great power. Gandalf released King Theoden from Saruman's influence with the aid of this magical staff. Next to his trusty sword Glamdring the white staff was Gandalf's chief weapon.
